Record bid for a space-hopping student

A STUDENT is planning to smash the world record for longest distance travelled on a space hopper, on Gwithian beach next weekend.

Roger Auster, 19, who studies in Falmouth, plans to travel 3.9 miles on his trusty hopper Napoleon in an attempt to raise funds for the World Land Trust.

He said: "I am getting very excited now. It is a bit of a stupid record. Yes, I will look a complete and utter muppet and possibly cause myself some serious pain, but there is a reason for doing so. I'm really pleased with how much I have raised so far, it is on £738 and my initial target was only £500."

Roger, who studies zoology at Exeter University on its campus in Falmouth, has been doing fitness training ahead of the big day but said he still needs to get some more bouncing practice in.

On the day, Roger will have university friends and members of his family from Gloucestershire there to cheer him on while he bumps along on his rubber, handled ball.

The current record for distance travelled on a space hopper in 24 hours stands at 3.11 miles and Roger has plans to do 3.9 miles, which he estimates will take four or five hours to complete.

He said: "It is quite slow really, so I feel a little bit sorry for the people who are coming to watch me.

"I have measured the distance along Gwithian beach and it should be long enough but I will turn around and come back again if not."

Roger plans to have two witnesses on hand to video and verify his Guinness World Record (TM) attempt and all the money he has managed to raise will go to The World Land Trust – a charity close to Roger's heart.
