Record week for Truro event
SOME 177 competitors from all across the country entered a record 264 events in this year's Truro Open tournament held at the club's Newbridge home, writes Sarah Butter.
The standard of play was superb across the whole week and it was yet another strong year from Cornish youngsters who once again proved they are reaching the top of their game and are ones to watch for the future, with no less than 35 Cornish competitors in the finals.

The tournament also boasted one of the largest mini events that has taken place in the county with a record number of entrants in the Taylor Trophy, sponsored by club chairman Paul Taylor.
More than 50 U8s, U9s and U10s took part and the standard of play was exceptional for such young children and produced some thrilling matches in all the age groups.
Final results were: U8s: 1 Sammy Norton (Cornwall); 2 Will Becconsall (Truro). U9s: Eric Bogden (Somerset). U10 Boys: 1 Joel While; 2 Edward Shattock (Somerset). Girls: Arielle Fitkin (Cornwall); 2 Anya Gough (Truro).
With the minis setting the standard for the week spectators were not let down in the Tony Pryce Cup U12s event which produced a a stunning final between Louis Newman, (Middlesex) and Finn Bass (Gosling) in the boys' singles with Louis winning in two sets. The Girls' event was won by Sally Atkinson with Octavia Cavill the runner-up.
In the Consolation rounds the winners were Oshi Leverton (Cornwall) and Ellie White (Truro).
In the Lillicrap Chilcott U14s Trophy it was a Cornwall dominated fixture. The boys' event was a large draw of 64 with the final between Cornwall's Joel Jones and James Woods.
Joel showed once again his dominating presence on court with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The girls was a closer contest with Cornwall's Amy Johns beating Alisa Cole 6-3, 6-4.
The Girls' Doubles was won by the Cornwall pair of Amy Johns and Alisa Cole, and the Boys' Doubles won by James Woods (Cornwall) and Tom Crothers (Staffs).
The Jackson-Stops & Staff U16s Trophies were well contested and again Cornwall's Athena Chrysanthou (TLTC, Gosling Academy) continued her good form beating the No 1 seed from Gloucester, Laura Eales, in a hard fought match 6-3, 7-5.
The Boys' event saw a great final with Cameron Hogg, the No 3 seed, just beating Alex El-Nemer, the No 5 seed, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3).
India Rojano (Cornwall) won the Girls' Consolation and Joel Jones (Cornwall) won the boys event against Kieron Bitter (Truro) 6-3, 6-2.
Truro and Penwith College once again sponsored the U18s events which always provides some of the best matches of the week and this year was no exception with the Girls' event being won by Athena Chrysanthou (Cornwall TLTC) and the boys again going three sets to Alex El-Nemer against Channel Islands player, Daniel Harrison.
The finals ended with the fast paced and highly entertaining Truro & Penwith College sponsored U18s Boys' Doubles with Truro's Huw Vicary and Kieron Butter against Cornwall's Reece Munnery and Channel Islands' Daniel Harrison. The game was a thriller with the Truro boys only narrowly losing in the third set tie break, 6-7 (6), 6-3, (10-7)
The senior events were won by Cornwall's Charlotte Pinch, the men's by Thomas Jones, and in the mixed event Truro's Dory Crellin and Rob Williams beat fellow club members Juliette Walters and Matt Roberts.
