Redruth chosen to host Cornwall's archives and records

CIVIC leaders in Redruth could barely contain their excitement at news the town has been chosen to host a new Cornish Archive and Records Office.

But they realised millions of pounds were still needed to pay for it at the brewery site, with a huge responsibility to deliver a top quality facility for Cornwall.

Councillor Barbara Ellenbroek described the “brilliant” news as “a great credit” to everyone who worked to make it happen, including site owner Horace Yeo.

Councillor Ian Thomas, chairman of the Cornish National Archive (Redruth) working group, said: “While we all appreciate that there is still much progress to be made in the realms of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), European Regional Development Fund and land transfer, today is a most memorable day for Redruth, the rest of Cornwall and one that we should celebrate.”

Councillor Lisa Dolley added: “I really feel this decision will unlock the potential of the Redruth corridor and bring rightful hope and prosperity.” Last Wednesday Cornwall Council’s Cabinet voted for Redruth over St Austell in recognition of the major economic benefits it could bring to the derelict space and neighbouring, empty brownfield sites.

Councillor Graeme Hicks said: “This investment in our town will act as a catalyst for the redevelopment of the Redruth corridor. “This also establishes Redruth as the cultural centre for Cornwall, which it rightly deserves. Redruth’s future is looking a whole lot better.”

Councillor Mark Kaczmarek said: “The senior officers at Cornwall Council believed that the Heritage Lottery would look more favourably on Redruth because it would bring historic buildings back to life and allow more development.

Councillor Mike Eddowes said: “It’s more important to recognise that, hopefully if we get the HLF money, Cornwall will get its records office.

George Eustice MP said: “Redruth was always the natural place because it is at the heart of the worldwide Cornish diaspora with around a quarter of all those living overseas with Cornish ancestry coming from our town. The new archive can also build on the great work already being done in Redruth by organisations like the Cornish Migration Project and the Cornish Studies Library.”
