Reds ready to step up search for new coach
REDRUTH will step up their search for a new head coach next week when interviews for the position begin.
West Briton Sport understands the club have received six applications for the role, though one has since pulled out of the running to succeed director of rugby David Penberthy, who announced he would be standing down at the end of the season last month.
The club's committee have been delighted with the calibre of applicants, and they will now conduct a number of interviews, starting from Wednesday.
Penberthy has been director of rugby at the Recreation Ground since taking over from head coach Nigel Hambly in 2010.
The club plan to scrap the director of rugby role, reverting back to a head coach taking charge of team affairs.
After next week's interviews, Redruth hope to appoint a new head coach by April.
Penberthy has not been involved in the club's search for his successor, although he has no doubt the Redruth committee will make the right move.
He said: "I am sure the club will make the right decision.
"We are limited in what we can offer, we don't have big bucks at Redruth.
"But that shouldn't be the motivation, there is a much bigger attraction than that, it's about knowing what rugby means to the people at this club.
"The club want somebody who is going to be respected, it's very much down to the individual.
"They've got to forge good relationships, and be strong enough because it is tough.
"I've had an enormous buzz from it and I'm sure the club will do what's right."
The 55-year-old will be ending a 41-year association with the club as he concentrates on his role as coach of the South West U18s Clubs' & Schools' Divisional Delivery team, as well as following son Aaron Penberthy's progress with the Cornish Pirates.
Confident
But having helped the Reds consolidate their position in National 2 South this season following relegation, Penberthy is confident the club is in safe hands.
He said: "The players are committed to Redruth. I'm really pleased they've stuck together, and on that front it's been a successful season.
"There is certainly a lot to build on for the future."
The Reds return to action after a two-week lay-off when they entertain top-of-the-table Richmond on Saturday (3pm).
They welcome back Luke Collins, while they will also check on the fitness of Sam Parsons and Craig Bonds.
However, they will be without the injured Chris Fuca.
Penberthy said: "Richmond play some really good stuff, they're obviously top for a reason. But they have shown that they are vulnerable and hopefully that is something we can exploit."
