Moving their home and business to Cornwall was the "best thing" the Cridland family ever did.

Harry and Judy, and their son Toby, moved 300 miles from the outskirts of Sheffield to a converted farm building near the village of Crafthole, in South East Cornwall, four years ago.

"We were on holiday in Polperro in the year 2000 and we fell in love with the area and particularly the people," 50-year-old Mr Cridland said yesterday.

"By chance we came across the Rame peninsula and loved the quietness and the villages like Kingsand and Cawsand.

"At the time Judy said we should retire down here in our 60s, but we thought we should move sooner rather than later."

The couple relocated their business – Ringinglow Rocking Horse Company, named after the village where they used to live – and moved to Cornwall in 2008.

Their busy workshop, where they manufacture new and restore old rocking horses, is just a short walk from their house.

"We live in a beautiful place but perhaps more importantly it is a calming place to work," Mr Cridland said.

"I knew we could do good business down here and when you are in a relaxed state of mind, rather than sitting in traffic for three hours a day, you tend to do better business.

"We still work hard but I think you tend to work more efficiently when you know you can go for a walk on the beach in the sunshine. That's a big incentive to get the job done and to finish work by 4.30-5pm rather than 6-7pm."

The family make the most of living in the countryside, enjoying walking and horse riding. A few minutes from the coast, they have bought their own small boat, while Toby, now 13, sails at Mosquito Sailing Club in Torpoint.

"It is the lifestyle we were looking for," Mr Cridland added. "It is the best thing we ever did."
