PEOPLE power could see Newquay's 100-year-old Towan beach rockpool restored to its former glory.

A group of residents is considering repairing the much-loved pool if Newquay Town Council fails to reconsider plans to take on ownership.

Restoration of the pool could cost as little as £3,000, which would see cracks in the walls repaired.

At Wednesday evening's town council meeting, resident Nicky Dewey addressed the room with her findings.

She said to members: "Tidal pools are rare in this country. There are only 20, of which Towan Pool is one.

"Would the council be happy to renovate it so the people of Newquay, who want it back, can use it?"

Last month Newquay town councillors decided to pursue the ownership of the Killacourt, Newquay Town Recreation Ground and Priory Wood – but not the rock pool – from Cornwall Council.

Newquay town councillor Andy Hannan has been leading the investigations on behalf on the council.

He said: "Our decision was reached as it was becoming apparent that by pushing Cornwall Council too much we ran the risk of losing it forever.

"It's not been taken off our list, we are just not pursuing it as avidly as the other three we are currently trying to get the ownership of again."

During the last four weeks since the town council's decision, residents have gathered to draw up a plan of action aiming to encourage the town council to reconsider its decision to not claim ownership of the pool.

The investigation into the cost of repairing the pool was led by Cornwall councillor Geoff Brown, who asked Cornwall Council to draw up a list of the expenses.

Cllr Brown said: "I did the research as I was under the impression that Newquay Town Council wanted the pool back in its ownership.

"Quite rightly though, they lost interest when they discovered the pool needed repairing.

"No one would want to assume responsibility for something that isn't fit for usage.

"But I would ask them to reconsider their decision to not pursue ownership of the pool as at such little cost to repair, I can not see why Cornwall Council would say no to repairing it."
