AN OPEN invitation has been issued to town residents to give Newquay a Spring Clean at the end of the month.

A week dedicated to bring back a bit of sparkle will run from Friday, May 21 to Friday May 28.

Cornwall Council's environment and highways departments, Serco, Newquay Town Council, Porth and Newquay Town Residents' Associations, Newquay in Bloom, the Regeneration Forum and the Probation Service are just some of the groups and people already on board with the idea.

At a special meeting regarding the Spring Clean Newquay event, held on Friday, members from the different organisations taking part discussed what will be tackled during the week long clean.

Community network manager, David Chadwick, said: "The idea is to promote civic pride in the town. We need to be able to get people involved in the clean-up week so that if they see someone dropping litter they will be more likely to stop them and tell them to not do it.

"The Newquay community needs to become the eyes and ears for the town. If people see a dog fouling on the street, which isn't picked up, we want them to report it to the council.

"On a more local scale we also want people to get out and tidy their own streets, gardens, paths and houses to make the town look better.

"The council can only do so much. We are not the only people in the town which is why we are trying to get people involved in this project to tidy the town."

Streets in the town, like Crantock Street and Beachfield Avenue, were highlighted as areas which were in a "desperate need" of tidying up.

Dave Sleeman, chairman of Newquay Town Residents' Association, said: "The lane behind KFC is a real problem as that seems to be a haven for litter being dropped and an area of general untidiness with stains on the path.

"Crantock Street is in desperate need of a clean, like Beachfield Avenue.

"Crantock Street will be tackled first by our residents' association. We'll give the place a good tidy and then carry out some planting in the area as well - planting near the post office and the undertakers." The clean-up on Crantock Street will take place on Saturday, May 22.
