GALLERY 49, Falmouth presents a collection of work by Richard Estes, entitled Urban Landscapes.

Alongside other greats such as Chuck Close and Robert Cottingham, Richard Estes was one of the founders of the hyper-realist movement of painting that grew up in the '60s and '70s alongside pop art.

Estes has been making hyper-realist – sometimes called super-realist – landscape paintings and prints for 40 years and his works hang in some of the most prestigious art galleries in America and Europe.

As the 'painter of New York' at a time when that city could be said to be the centre of the art world, there was little need for Estes to exhibit farther afield. As a result, this extraordinary painter and printmaker has had very little exposure in the UK, which makes the latest show at Gallery 49 in Falmouth's old High Street all the more essential to fans of post-war contemporary art.

Among the screen prints on display the visitor will be able to see pictures of New York, but also of the city's suburbs and one of Rome. These works originally formed parts of two separate portfolios called The Urban Landscape and Urban Landscapes III, produced in 1973 and 1981 respectively.

The prints themselves are extremely complex in that they require very many individual screens – in order to separate the different colours and tones – some of the prints on display use more than 40 to complete the image.

Estes has even made some six feet wide prints that use over 100 different screens.

Richard Estes' screen prints will be on display from today (Wednesday) for three weeks. Please call before heading to the gallery to check opening time as these may vary.

The current opening times are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 12.30pm until 5.30pm; closed Thursdays; and from 12.30pm to 5.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
