Rippon to open £6m dementia care home

A pioneering £6.2 million specialist care home for people living with dementia is being opened in the Westcountry.

Waypoints Plymouth in Ernesettle Lane is only the second of its kind in the country and will be officially opened by Alzheimer's Society ambassador Angela Rippon next month.

Martin Young, managing director of Waypoints Care Group, said the 64-bedroomed centre had been carefully designed to meet the special needs of people with dementia.

"Our philosophy is to give people living with dementia freedom," he said.

According to the Alzheimer's Research Trust, the South West counts some of the highest rates in England of the brain condition, which is associated with memory loss.

It is currently estimated that 3,100 people living in Plymouth have dementia and the South West Dementia Partnership says this could rise to more than 4,200 people by 2021.

Mr Young, who is a qualified architect, said the home consisted of four distinct separate areas, each catering for different types and severity of dementia.

"A lot of thought and clinical expertise has gone into all aspects of the design of the home environment, so that it is friendly, reassuring and doesn't feel institutional," he said.

"We know though that high-calibre staff set the standards we want for our residents and we are actively recruiting staff.

"We have had a very warm welcome in the local community and want Waypoints Plymouth to play an active part in the neighbourhood through activities and volunteering opportunities."

Waypoints Plymouth will be officially opened next month and the first residents will move in to the home in January.

Key features of the facility include social hub, where residents and their visitors can meet, the Estuary View restaurant, with a roof terrace offering views across the open countryside and the river, and a reminder of the past at Ye Olde Sweet Shop.
