Road could unlock £270m of investment
The first turf has been cut to mark the official start of work on a key road in Taunton which could unlock £270 million of investment.
The £22 million Northern Inner Distribution Road led by Somerset County Council which will link Priory Avenue to Staplegrove Road is designed to ease congestion.
It will also provide access to the Firepool regeneration site where there are ambitious plans for a riverside business, residential and shopping development. Preparatory work began in the summer but representatives and councillors from Somerset County Council, Taunton Deane Borough Council and contractor Carillion gathered at the site yesterday for the traditional turf-cutting ceremony.
Harvey Siggs, council cabinet member for highways, said: "This road will not only make travelling around Taunton much easier but it will also create jobs and provide homes for local people."
