Road works will close B3304 between Porthleven and Helston for 12 weeks
THE main road between Helston and Porthleven will be closed for around three months in the new year as major engineering works get under way.
There are already temporary traffic lights on the B3304 where the road has partially given way.
Reporting back on the latest plans to repair the highway, Cornwall Councillor Andrew Wallis said the closure was unavoidable, given the amount of work to be done.
“It is going to be shut for at least 12 weeks for very specialist equipment to be brought in to strengthen that road. There’s nothing we can do about that,” he said.
He said diversions would be set up and all traffic would have to come into town via the Penzance Road and Methleigh Bottoms.
Mr Wallis added: “It means everyone will be coming up Fore Street to access the other parts of Porthleven.
“I am looking to see if we can suspend the limited waiting time on Fore Street. The amount of traffic will lead to far too much congestion.
“I am also looking at how to smooth out the process while this work is carried out.”
He said it was better that the work is done in the new year, which is generally quieter, and not during the tourist season.
Depending on the weather, he added that he expected the work would be completed in time for Easter.
He said contractors from Cormac would also use the opportunity to resurface parts of the B3304 that have been worn smooth in the summer.
Bus companies, the emergency services, utility companies and other agencies and the public are now being informed by Cornwall Council of the closure.
