A spokesman for the police said: “The offender, a white man entered the shop armed with weapons described as a knife and a meat cleaver and threatened the cashier before stealing the contents of the till.”
Bill Williams, who was manning the store this morning, said the attack had shaken people in the town.
He said: “It was very scary for the member of staff and for a little shop like us it was a lot of money just before Christmas.”
Mr Williams said the woman had worked at the shop for many years.
He said: “He just shoved the meat cleaver in her face and demanded the money. She is traumatised and very upset. It’s a horrendous thing to happen.”
Mr Williams said it was the first crime of this kind he had heard of in Bude and the community was in shock.
“I think the rest of Bude are now thinking, crikey, is there an armed robber in the town?”
The offender is described as being in his 20s or 30s, approximately 5ft 8ins tall, of slim build with dark hair, a thin face and clean shaven.
He was wearing a black puffa jacket, slim cut light coloured trousers and dark leather footwear.
