Cornish band Kaiak will entertain audiences at the Eden Café this Friday with their rich, roots-based music.

The band has evolved over the last year from a two-way collaboration to a fully-fledged four-piece, featuring drums, bass, the melodeon and concertina among others.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of The Divine Comedy and Ian Dury, Kaiak's experimental, cabaret-type performance is defined by big rhythms coupled with catchy melodies and exotic vocals.

Kaiak has been building up a strong local following with gigs throughout Cornwall, while their debut single has been played extensively by BBC Radio Cornwall after the station named them Band of the Week earlier in the year.

Ashley Van Dyck, Eden Café Manager, said: "Kaiak creates something new with every performance, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for the Eden Café."

Doors open at 7:30pm and tickets cost £5, or £4 for concessions and tickets bought at the café in advance.

The Eden Café will also be hosting a gig on Saturday, September 1. The Portraits, otherwise known as singer Lorraine Reilly and pianist Jeremy Millington, will be showing off their warm, upbeat sound, which combines folk with music theatre, jazz and classical styles.

Recognised for their unique voices and poetic lyrics, The Portraits released a song called Liberty for the Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, which was presented to her in person.

On Saturday, the gig will start at 7pm and go on until 11pm. Tickets cost £6 or £5 for concessions.

There will be a selection of food served until 9pm on both nights, including sharing platters and delicious homemade cakes.
