A book in which Prince Philip recounted his role in a dramatic wartime battle has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Dark Seas: The Battle Of Cape Matapan, by Dr Jane Harrold, was the first book in the Britannia Naval Histories of World War II series, and was published by University of Plymouth Press.

Its foreword was written by the Duke of Edinburgh who served as a midshipman on HMS Valiant when she was involved in the battle in 1941.

The book has now been shortlisted for a Mountbatten Maritime Award, the literary section of the Maritime Media Awards 2012.

Dr Harrold, archivist and deputy curator of the college's museum, said: "I was delighted to be nominated for such a prestigious award.

"Working on the series with the team from the museum and University of Plymouth Press has provided me with a fascinating insight into a key period of Britain's naval history which can now be shared with the wider public."

Prince Philip studied at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth – followed by his sons Princes Charles and Andrew and his grandson Prince William – graduating top of his class in early 1940.
