Rush-hour chaos as refuse truck overturns on A30
Drivers around Exeter faced long delays yesterday after a refuse lorry overturned on the A 30 near Ide, forcing police to close the road for three hours.
The driver of the vehicle was unhurt, but police had to shut the busy eastbound carriageway to traffic. Drivers caught on the wrong side of the diversion were trapped in their cars until a specialised recovery vehicle arrived on the scene. It had to be reversed more than half a mile along the carriageway, between stationary cars, to right the overturned lorry. Diversions were put in place.

Also, over the weekend five people suffered serious injuries in two separate traffic incidents.
Four were hurt after a crash near Umberleigh at 3pm on Sunday, in which one car went down a steep embankment and became wedged in tree above the Barnstaple to Exeter railway line. The driver, 74, from Chawleigh is in a critical condition and the line was closed while the car was recovered.
