THE Saints went down to a second half Spike Hughes brace after they had taken the lead at the air base on Saturday.

Home skipper Luke Elstone headed an early chance over the bar from Carl Stevens' corner before Chris Lock ran on to a Ross Duncan through ball to bring a fine save from home keeper Tom Collins.

Matt Thirkle then skimmed the visitors' crossbar with a fierce drive and Carl Stevens brought a fine save from Saints' keeper Tony Simons.

But it needed another superb save by Collins to prevent the visitors from taking the lead just before the break, the keeper recovering after spilling Duncan's shot to block Lock's follow-up effort.

Hughes hit the Saints' crossbar early in the second half, but St Ives took the lead on 51 minutes when Chris Pugh tapped home Danny Paynter's cross at the back post.

The Airmen levelled on the hour when Hughes lobbed over the advancing Simons from Stevens' through ball and after Collins had pulled off another superb save from Duncan following a Paynter corner, Hughes grabbed his second and the winner with a fierce 15-yard drive 10 minutes from time.

St Ives: T Simons, C Richards, E Wilkes, C Pugh, C Lock, J Hughes, M Allen, R Cook, M Fox, D Paynter, R Duncan. Sub not used: J Curnow.

Man of the match: Ross Cook (St Ives).
