IT TAKES courage for an artist to state: "However far short my own work falls when evaluated by the standard of Leonardo, or of Rembrandt, or Matisse and Schiele, it is their benchmark I prefer to be judged by."
-

Fortunately, Graham Hewitt, whose Drawn From Life opens in the Salt House on November 2, possesses more than his fair share of "the right stuff" and of artistic talent.
One who studied at Wimbledon Art School and at Leeds College of Art, it was at the former that drawing tutors Lionel Ellis and David Poole, placed a high value on draughtsmanship as the basis for all creative visual work.

Following his graduation he taught at Harrogate School of Art before coming to St Ives in the mid-1960s when he began teaching at Redruth School of Art and later at Cornwall College.
He believes that drawing is fundamental to every aspect of the visual arts, and that "an artist who can't draw is a contradiction in terms."
