SENNEN Cove's Sam Smart will be hoping to build on his debut win as a professional boxer in December when he takes to the ring again next week, writes Lee Hall.

The 29-year-old southpaw beat Woodford's Duncan Cottier in a four-round middleweight bout in December.

And now Smart, who is also a professional surfer, will be looking to maintain his promising start on the pro stage when he challenges Walsall's Bobby Wood at Trowbridge Town Hall on March 26.

Wood, also a southpaw, is unbeaten in two professional fights.

"This will be a tough test for me, and at my age these are the fights I need to bring me on quicker," said Smart.

"My training has been going great and I have been doing three sessions a day.

"I don't know much about Bobby Wood, although I know he is a very good amateur, winning the Midlands title and representing the England team.

"He is also a southpaw, like myself, so it should make for a good battle."

Smart is a member of 'On the Cobbles Gym' in Plymouth and is coached by Dave Smith.

"Dave has got me in good shape and knows his stuff, as he helped Scott Dann on his way to a British and Commonwealth title," said Smart.

"I really appreciate the support of my fans so far, as well as Relentless Energy Drink and the Oxygen Health Club in Market Jew Street, Penzance for their sponsorship help."

During his amateur career, Smart, an instructor at his own surf school in Sennen (www.smartsurf.co.uk), fought in 25 bouts, winning 20, including nine KO's and lost five on points.

● Tickets for Smart's second professional bout are available at Kelly Anza Hair Design (12 Parade Street, Penzance) at £30 each, and will there will be a bus from Penzance for anyone requiring transport. Call Sam for details on 07733 176 917.
