Sarah shares sailing stories with Truro pupils
An inspirational sailor who battled a killer disease before going on to Olympic glory met Westcountry schoolchildren yesterday.
Double gold medallist Sarah Ayton overcame meningitis at the age of 15 and went on to climb the podium at Athens and Beijing.
Now retired from the sport, the 32-year-old former member of the three "blondes in a boat" who won the Yngling sailing class event in China shared her sailing stories with pupils at Truro School.
The mother-of-two was in a coma for three days and close to death after contracting meningococcal septicaemia in 1995. But she was treated quickly and was back sailing just two weeks later, going on to become patron for Meningitis UK and collect an OBE for her work.

Sarah, now married and living in Weymouth, said she had been extremely lucky to have been able to go on to achieve her dreams.
She added: "I was given a warm welcome by the pupils and hope I have given them the inspiration to aim even higher in whatever they do."
The visit was part of a tour organised by Volvo Car UK to celebrate its sponsorship of British sailing.
