Scheme criticised after mum is injured
A CONTROVERSIAL traffic calming scheme in Liskeard has come under fire again after a mother was injured crossing the road with her child.
Measures were put into force at Castle Street in October and have since caused huge controversy among residents and drivers in the town.

Traffic calming on Castle Street Liskeard
In the latest incident, a car reversed into a young mother who was pushing her small child across the road.
Police were called to the incident at 7.45pm on Friday evening.
A silver Renault Megane is reported to have entered the new road-calming section of Castle Street, heading out of Liskeard.
Police said the vehicle stopped outside the Anapurna restaurant due to oncoming traffic and reversed, hitting the woman.
She sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene by ambulance staff. The child was unhurt.
Liskeard police are calling for the driver of the silver Renault Megane and any witnesses to come forward.
Councillors are now calling for changes to be made to the system.
Cornwall councillor for Liskeard Central Jay Schofield said he had been inundated with comments about the new road layout.
He said: "It's a bit of a catch-22 situation though because for the residents it is much needed but for motorists it doesn't appear to be working. I'm keen on getting traffic away from the town centre and it makes the need for a link road more obvious.
"Each time I have received a comment from someone I have spoken to County Highways and they have assured me it is being closely monitored.
"For the residents there needed to be something in place. It seems the favoured option by residents and motorists is to have traffic lights."
The measures have seen the pavement widened to create single lane traffic through Castle Street.
Traffic leaving the town now has priority over traffic coming into town and lorries and buses are being diverted to reach the town via Addington Road.
Mayor Tony Powell said a major review into the town's traffic movements will now take place. He said: "We will be reviewing the situation in the new year as part of our review of the town plan, so we will be looking at the overall impact on the town and the impact on other proposals that have been prompted by the arrangements in Castle Street."
Anyone with information relating to the incident on Friday is asked to contact PC Wood at Liskeard police station on 08452 777444.

“"Mayor Tony Powell said a major review into the town's traffic movements will now take place"
Why was'nt a major review done BEFORE this work was done?
Castle street is one of the busiest roads in liskeard so which genius decided to half its capacity?
Now this constant game of chicken will continue until someone is seriously injured”

“Maybe it's me but it was 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. She should not have tried to cross so close to the car and the driver should have used those things called mirrors. Why are so many human errors blamed on the roads?”

“As a resident of the area I wish they would remove this ridiculous road narrowing scheme immediately. It is dangerous to both pedestrians and drivers and the increased noise level outside the house as cars race away is driving us all mad. Cars used to drive straight passed my house at a steady speed, now they race each way causing more noise and co2 than ever before.
PUT IT BACK AS IT WAS NOW !”

“Sadly this was an accident waiting to happen as visibility of oncoming traffic is a bit restricted. Traffic lights would make more sense here if the road is to be kept narrowed.”
