School reveals plans for more sport facilities
A NEW athletics track, all-weather hockey pitch and spectator facilities could be built at Newquay Tretherras Academy under plans revealed yesterday.
School managers held talks with 15 "sports partners" about improving sporting provision for other schools and clubs in the town.

The new facilities could be funded by Government agency Sport England, although it's understood that Tretherras would have to contribute a similar amount – 'match-funding'.
Cash would also be spent on improving existing sports provision at the academy, including tennis courts and the sports hall.

Steve Dunn, leading the project for the school, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to improve the sporting facilities in Newquay and increase sporting participation for students and the community."
The school has come under fire over its intention to sell off part of its grounds to Tesco for a supermarket.
Academy managers have said the sale is necessary to ensure the school remains "fit for purpose" for the next 50 years. Details of a potential deal have not yet been made public.
It is not clear how much Tretherras itself would have to contribute to the new sports facilities, nor where the money would come from.
A school spokesman said all 15 potential sports partnerships at yesterday's meeting welcomed the plans.
There was particular excitement about "high-level" athletics and hockey facilities which were currently lacking in Cornwall, he said.
"At the meeting Tretherras explained that by upgrading the sports fields students would benefit by gaining all-year-round access, improved sport curriculum provision and reduced fixture cancellation," he said.
"Improving the drainage of the fields will increase participation capacity and remodelling will allow pitches to be capable of hosting full fixtures."
Sports that would be available to Tretherras pupils and youngsters in the local community under the plans included hockey, athletics, football, rugby, cricket, netball and tennis.
