Schoolcomms communication app could save schools £millions
A School Gateway app aiding school communication with parents, teachers and students could save schools millions of pounds.
Cornwall-based technology company Schoolcomms has developed the School Gateway app which is currently being showcased in London at the British Educational Training and Technology Show (BETT).

The company works with thousands of schools to provide fully integrated communication system which includes text messaging, attendance tracking and cashless payment services which is fully interactive and free to download.
It is estimated that currently around 80 percent of schools in the UK are communicating with parents by sending SMS text messages. Schools are paying around six pence per message which can cost hundreds of pounds a year.

Schoolcomms Managing Director, Tim Perkin, said “Annually, we estimate that primary schools spend more than £6.5 million on sending text messages; secondary schools spend over £2 million.
“The number of Smartphones (iPhone, Android) in the UK is steadily rising – roughly 60% of adults with school-age children have a Smartphone, so School Gateway could easily save UK schools more than £5 million every year.
"Already this month we have seen thousands of schools across the UK being affected by snow and having to contact parents with information about late opening and school closures. Our new instant messaging School Gateway App could have saved schools over half a million pounds.”
In addition to the reduced costs to send messages through the app, School Gateway doesn’t rely on mobile phone signal. Anyone using the School Gateway App can receive a message from their child’s school when they are in a wifi, 3G or 4G signal area.
School Gateway can be downloaded for free from Apple’s iTunes store and the Android Marketplace.
It is being launched at the BETT exhibition at London’s ExCel from 30 January to 2 February 2013 on stand C330.

What about the many parents who do not have smart phones? My phone is very basic will not go online and is very rarely switched on. Have the schools never heard of landlines? I am not a technophobe but I bought my mobile only ever to be used for emergencies and so it is off 99% of the time and I am not the only one.”
