Service charges earn councils more than tax
Almost half the councils in the Westcountry earn more money through parking charges and school meals than council tax, says a new study.
Of the 11 local authorities that cover Devon and Cornwall, five recoup more income from services, charges and fees than they do from council tax.
The statistics from the Audit Commission, which is responsible for protecting the public purse, place the region ahead of the trend when compared to the national average of one in three.
