Most people wouldn't consider the ominous sign of a fin emerging from the water a reason to jump in after it, but on this occasion Jane Morgan's eye for a good photograph convinced her otherwise.

The Penzance photographer took this snap of a Blue Shark after heading out to sea 15 miles off the town last month armed with just a stinking chum bucket and a pole camera.

And as well as being rewarded with a great picture, Jane's bravery also earned her industry recognition when she was honoured with an award for it and two other pictures taken in Britain.

Jane, 47, a mature student at University College Falmouth, said she was delighted with her success in the British Society of Underwater Photographers Best of British Portfolio. She said: "I have won a few awards over the years but never the British one. There are actually really good British photographs out there, so I was really excited to win one."

She added that after taking advice from local fishermen she went out in search of the elusive Blue Shark photo.

"We had almost drifted to Land's End by the end of the day, we had been out there nearly two hours, when suddenly we saw a fin and I thought well we have a shot," she said.

"We probably saw five or six throughout the day. The last two came in and they stuck together. At the beginning we were using a pole camera, but for the last two I jumped into the water with them. They were just amazing."

The great picture added to two more taken by Jane in St Kilda, Scotland – one from a cave of a diver and the other deep within kelp, of a Nedibranch sea slug.
