BIG-hearted shoppers donated a generous 817kg of food to Callington Foodbank during a collection at the local Tesco store.

On Saturday, September 8, volunteers from up to 20 miles away turned up at Tesco Callington to lend a hand in the push to build the foodbank stocks and feed the increasing numbers of people struggling to make ends meet.

The volunteers, including members of Tesco's Retired Staff Association, made the day a big success by standing inside the superstore and asking shoppers to donate items to help feed local people in crisis.

Alan Woollcombe, Tesco community champion, said: "I was amazed at how generous some people were, coming out of the supermarket with bags and trolleys full of food for the collection. It was lovely to see lots of children getting involved and walking up to the volunteers with armfuls of food. It's encouraging to see so many shoppers donating."

Callington Foodbank manager, David Jewell, said: "The need for emergency food is bigger than ever. The foodbank wouldn't be able to run without public generosity. It is hard to describe the difference giving a food box makes to parents whose children would otherwise go to bed hungry."
