TRIBUTES have been paid to two "lovely" sisters who were killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving a fuel tanker on the A30 in Hayle last week.

The women, both from the Newquay area, have been named as Janis Cusworth, 61, from St Columb Road, and Carol Jiggins, 60.

Both were travelling in the same vehicle, which was registered to an address in Henver Road in Newquay.

Their vehicle was partially trapped under the tanker following the collision at the Loggans Moor roundabout at 10.30am last Wednesday.

Involved

Both Carol and her sister Janis were pronounced dead at the scene.

A camper van and a Land Rover Discovery were also involved in the incident.

The woman in the Land Rover was treated for shock on the scene while one of the two occupants of the camper van was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro with minor injuries.

A total of three fire engines from Camborne, Penzance and Bodmin, five ambulance crews, a dozen police and an air ambulance from the South West Ambulance Service, were called to the scene.

A statement from Carol's family, released through the police, read: "Carol was passionate and fun-loving; a wonderful mum and partner.

"She lived in Cornwall for over 30 years and loved the outdoors, walking on the beach and cliffs, scuba diving and swimming.

"Carol was a hard-working, independent person who loved travel and adventure. She was very creative and generous and cared deeply for animals, giving many pets a loving home throughout her life.

"Carol leaves behind a partner, three children, a grandchild and many, many friends who will all miss her deeply."

Janis's family added: "As a wife and mother Janis was warm, caring and supportive of her family.

"There was never a problem she couldn't solve or a situation that she could not handle.

"She was also a committed member of the community, and has been involved in the St Enoder Pantomime Players for 18 years, producing this year's 25th anniversary show."

Sharon Orchard, a member of the players for 25 years and vice-chairman of the group, said: "It wasn't just Janis who was involved with our group as Carol made the dresses as well.

"They were both lovely people and were well liked by all. We knew they had died last Wednesday, when the crash happened, as we were told by their family.

"We were instructed to continue with our 25th anniversary show as that was what they both would have wanted. It was hard and there definitely wasn't a dry eye in the house as we closed on Wednesday evening's performance. But we did it for them.

"Both of them will be missed by everyone here and in the local communities."
