A SITE near Truro has been put forward as the favoured location for Cornwall's first purpose-built stadium.

The Truro and Threemilestone option has been earmarked by stadium specialists Gardiner and Theobold as the preferred site.

The consultants were commissioned in May by Cornwall Council to look at the feasibility of building a 10,000-capacity stadium, based on social factors, transport, and its environmental and economic impact.

Pirates

It ruled out Roche, near St Austell, which was also being considered as a potential site.

It means the long-held hopes of finally seeing a venue to stage both football and rugby events in the county as well as attracting large name bands have moved a step closer.

The stadium could rival the Plymouth Pavilions, Plymouth Argyle's Home Park ground and Exeter's rugby base.

It will be welcome news to many fighting for a new facility, including Kevin Heaney, chairman of Truro City Football Club, who has previously spoken of ambitious plans to build a stadium at Threemilestone to be shared with the Cornish Pirates. It is thought a stadium would boost the Pirates' ambitions to play in the Premiership and attract high calibre players to the area.

Cornwall Council has said the venue would attract high visitor numbers and bring challenges in terms of planning, environment and transport.

A spokesman said: "The project team is looking at options to mitigate the impact of a stadium on the surrounding areas.

"Further work and discussions will now take place with local stakeholders to identify a preferred site in Truro and Threemilestone."

Inspiration

Carolyn Rule, Cornwall Council Cabinet member for the economy and regeneration, said: "It's great to see the project take a step forward by identifying a location.

"I'm sure once it's completed the stadium will be an inspiration to all who use it and will encourage participation in sports, as well as the economic benefits it can provide for the whole of Cornwall."

A further study, including a business plan, will identify potential facilities and a tenant or tenants.

It is expected the study will be completed by December.

“It would be interesting to ask Carolyn Rule to comment further about potential users of the new stadium.

Truro City Football Club's ground has been hocked to the moon and beyond by Kevin Heaney, and it's supposed to be in trust in perpetuity for the people of Truro and Cornwall.

In my view, his association with the Club has only ever been about the development potential of the Treyew Road site. If he now tries to make a case to be a core user of the new stadium on the grounds that he'll pay rent the same as anyone else, but that having provided an alternative venue for the Club to play, he has a right to develop or sell the ground off, then I hope the County Council won't be falling for that ruse. He doesn't have a rock bottom credit rating for no reason, and I'm sure that all the people and companies owed money by him would be speechless if he were to be allowed to exploit the situation in this way.

Perhaps the Club's trustees can also explain how Heaney was able to secure so much borrowing against the ground in any case, as it was always my understanding that nothing like this could happen without the supporters and users being consulted and aware.

With a potential development of so much significance to the County on the horizon, I think that the general public really is entitled to some answers. There is far too much going on behind closed doors - and the land is supposed to be in trust. It all needs to be investigated as soon as possible, and certainly before the likes of Kevin Heaney get anywhere near a new stadium.”

“Heaney is only in to anything for himself alone.
This stadium proposal is for Cornwall, so let's make sure that it happens, and keep him well out of it please.”

“What sickens me is that while Heaney appeared to be a man of means, he held the ear of so many people.

Now that he evidently is not, and has had to be taken to law repeatedly for people to get what they're owed, then of course he's going to be treated with due caution - but why is it that money talks so loud in the first place, when there are so many contra-indications in respect of the way someone conducts themselves.

Turning a blind eye is one thing when it comes to trivia, but where there are so many serious and justified concerns about any individual, let's be honest, it's about time that everyone stuck to their principles first to make sure the truth stays out there.”

“There's going to be another study into prospective tenants or users.
As Heaney's credit rating is an open book, it's clear he wouldn't get past even the first tenancy hurdle, so no worries there for other users.”

“These stadium consultants are expensive because they're experts. They will know about Heaney's past record and will take it into account, and Cornwall Council wouldn't mess up a development proposal as important as this one by letting the control or profits get into the wrong hands.”

“Pirates wouldn't have anything to do with Heaney.

I'd just like to be assured that he's not going to benefit personally in any way whatsoever from some land deal or another. When so many people have suffered as a result of Heaney's financial dealings, it would be plain wrong if he ever stood to profit again from our County or Cornish potential.

I hope Cornwall Councillors will give us this assurance in your newspaper.”

“I can't see the Council being stupid enough for a second to be spending taxpayers' money on expensive consultants, and then asking them to go to talk to the likes of Kevin Heaney, when he owes so much money all over the place.
Why would they want to write off the stadium idea before it'd even got off the ground - it just wouldn't make sense - they know about his reputation, it goes well before him.”

“Kevin Heaney and the Cornish Pirates in the same Stadium - don't make me laugh!

The Pirates have a long and proud history and represent the best of all that's truly Cornish. Why would anyone even think that it was a good idea to jeopardise or tarnish that?”
