Work is to begin shortly on the refurbishment of the iconic head frame at South Crofty Mine at Pool.

Cornwall Council will be carrying out the work on the New Cooks Kitchen head frame, and the two Grade II Listed engine houses at Chappel's Shaft, as part of the agreement with mine owners Western United Mines to enable new development and regeneration to go ahead in the area.

Its removal will allow scaffolding to be put up around the head frame.

Refurbishment work will include grit blasting and repainting to prevent further deterioration of the structure.

The work is being led by staff from CORMAC Solutions Ltd, Cornwall Council's Economic Development, Historic Environment Service and Cornwall Development Company, and is expected to start in February 2013.

Stephen Rushworth, Cornwall Council's portfolio holder for economy and regeneration, said: "It marks the start of the regeneration aspirations for South Crofty and will contribute to the wider regeneration and employment opportunities around the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area."

John Pollard, the council's portfolio holder for localism, sustainability, devolution and heritage, said: "It has been a longstanding ambition that this local landmark is conserved and maintained.

"It has been leased to the council under the agreement with Western United Mines as it is not currently required by the company to access their proposed workings.

"The restoration that we are carrying out will include a new coat of paint guaranteed to protect it for 25 years."

“Excellent news, Cornwall Council will be doing a great service to a regenerating area by conserving this iconic structure for the future to remind everyone what mining did for Cornwall, what a remarkable change of tack from the ambivalence of the former Corwall County Council who did their utmost to see Crofty buried without trace under housing estates..

In the words of Harry Safari "Lets hear it for the miners who we hope will mine again"... very shortly it looks as if they will and future riches will ripple out of Crofty to the great benefit of us all as Cornish Boys get back to work doing what they do best.”

“Glad to hear it. A great job was done to Robinson's head gear across the road at Heartlands. The Crofty head frame stands as a well-known "monument" in Pool-Camborne visible for miles.”
