Spotlight falls on Karen

A MEMBER of Sithney School has made the shortlist for the title Teaching Assistant of the Year.

Karen Holloway was one of 15 people to reach the final of the event out of 150 nominees countrywide.

Although she did not achieve the top spot, head teacher Susan Evans said the school was proud.

Mrs Evans said: "Sithney School is celebrating after one of its staff has been recognised in a national award."

Teaching Personnel, a national teaching supply agency, ran the competition as part of its drive to celebrate the work of "unsung heroes".

Mrs Evans said: "Teaching assistants work so hard alongside our teachers to make every day special for pupils. I personally nominated Mrs Holloway for her incredibly high level of professionalism.

"She is an outstanding example of being a lifelong learner as she strives constantly to improve her work, often researching at home to find ways to make learning even more memorable and meaningful for our pupils."

A representative from Teaching Personnel called at school to surprise Mrs Holloway with a certificate.

A delighted Mrs Holloway accepted her award with pupils and staff cheering her success and said: "All TAs (teaching assistants) work very hard. I'm just doing my job but we all appreciate being thanked for the work we do."
