St Agnes Amateur Boxing Club seeks women to get fit in new class
WOMEN are being sought by a boxing club in St Agnes to get fit and potentially compete in the ring.
St Agnes Amateur Boxing Club, founded by kickboxer Paul Hodgson and former professional boxer Bill English, now runs a women-only fitness session led by international professional boxer Wayne Salmon and assisted by the club's only competing female amateur, Emily Carne.
"We started the club a year ago and run popular boxing training sessions for men, mixed and junior groups," Mr Hodgson said. "Emily's the only female who takes part regularly as a boxer and as it's important to be accessible to the whole community we decided to launch the women-only fitness sessions.
"These classes are based on fitness and circuits, rather than fighting or sparring, but they are designed to encourage women to take part, have fun and improve their health."

The club is a not-for-profit community interest company and relies on membership, class fees and funding from sources such as the village improvement committee and the parish council to buy equipment and cover overheads.
Ms Carne said: "The women-only class is aimed at all ages and abilities, whether someone's super-fit or hasn't exercised in ages.
"There's no pressure for any woman to take up boxing, but if another did catch the boxing bug that would be great."
The club is planning its first boxing show, where its boxers will fight other amateurs from the region to raise money to improve its facilities.
The women-only class takes place on Wednesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the Old Youth Club, Angwin Avenue, and costs £3 per session.
