A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said they are looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash and appealing for witnesses.
“One of those lines may be that he perhaps suffered a medical episode. However we are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the car at the time in order to piece together the final moments.”
The road was closed for about five hours.
Next of kin have been informed.
Witnesses are asked to call the police on 101 quoting the log number 541.
