St Blazey 2, St Dennis 1
ST BLAZEY demonstrated that they can pose a real threat to league leaders St Stephens Borough with their home victory over promotion rivals St Dennis.
Along with Borough, St Blazey are proving to be the form team in the division with this latest success extending their unbeaten run to 11 games, including nine wins.
Manager Dave Hooper was delighted with the success of the tactical plan which halted the St Dennis threat. He said: "We aimed to frustrate their midfield and cut off the supply to the front men and it worked as we took a 2-0 interval lead.
"They did not cause us any great problems and we managed to contain them even when they came at us in the second half. I feel they ran out of ideas and could not break us down with Neil Burton always sound at centre half."
St Dennis began life in the East Cornwall League with an 11-match winning run up until the end of January. But they have taken only four points from four games since then and manager Dave Rickard has had to contend with opposing teams who have done their homework on the strengths that had made St Dennis early promotion favourites.
St Blazey had the better of the first half and deservedly went ahead when Josh Bragg, made headway on the left before scoring with a tremendous 30-yard effort.
Richard Elland added the second when he was left unmarked at the far post to score with a header from a right wing cross by Mark Bird.
St Dennis stepped up their game in the second half and reckoned they might have done enough to deserve a point.
They had to be content with only the one goal, however, with Chris Brown scoring following a free kick given away.
Man of the match: Neil Burton (St Blazey).
