St Columb couple hope new gin will be perfect tonic for Cornish food and drink
CORNWALL might traditionally be known for its pasties and cream teas but a couple from St Columb are hoping to add another top product to the list – gin.
Jon and Jilly Meyer launched their new premium ‘Elemental’ gin on Monday after two years of painstaking research and hard work setting up the Cornish Gin Distillery.
With the help of their eldest children, Alice and Jeremy, they travelled the world picking the best ingredients to add to their recipe, including juniper berries from Croatia, coriander seed from Spain and cassia bark from China.
Distilled and bottled entirely in Cornwall, the tipple is specially handcrafted in small batches using Cornish spring water.

It is made using the more traditional and expensive ‘one shot’ method, rather than using a concentrate as many commercial gins do, the couple say.
Jon said: “We have been passionate about gin since the first time we tasted our first ever Martini almost thirty years ago. Having seen the micro-distilleries in London we began researching gin over two years ago and decided that Cornwall deserved its own high quality premium gin. It has been a long, but enjoyable process.
“We chose the name Elemental because gin production is an ancient process dependent on the alchemical elements of copper and water, both of which are also strong symbols of Cornwall.”
The couple have vowed to work with other small Cornish companies and have already partnered with several suppliers.
Elemental gin was unveiled at the Choose Cornish Awards held by Cornwall Food & Drink at Heartlands.
The event saw the Cornish food industry’s top movers and shakers sample the new spirit with a range of soft drinks provided by local producer Cornish Orchards.
Jon added: “The Choose Cornish Awards was a fitting place to launch our new gin, as the event was all about recognising quality local producers and championing the Cornish food and drink industry. The best way to experience Elemental Cornish Gin is in the way we originally intended; in a glass with good company, so the awards ceremony was the perfect place for our launch.”
