St Ives add Semmens to promotion chasing squad
PROMOTION-CHASING St Ives have made another addition to their fast-improving squad by signing Josh Semmens, writes Nigel Walrond.
The former St Just centre, who is the younger brother of ex-Mounts Bay and Cornish All Blacks duo Darren and Jamie Semmens, has put pen to paper for the Cornwall and Devon League outfit.
He made his debut at inside centre in last Saturday's fine 23-15 victory at leaders Teignmouth (match report, page 79), which leaves unbeaten St Ives only one point off top spot in the table.
St Ives head coach Joff Rowe is very pleased with the latest new face at Alexandra Road.
"I am delighted that Josh has decided to join us at this time," said Rowe, whose team have now won all seven of their league matches so far this season.
"He has all the attributes to play at this level and is a player we want to develop.
"The position of centre is an area where we need some strength and depth.
"If people like Josh are interested in joining the club, we must be doing something right.
"I believe the reason for the interest in St Ives is two-fold - the style of play we adopt, and the professional standards set by the coaching staff and management.
"I thank Rob (Elloway), Ceiron (Thomas) and Ian (Deacon) for their support and commitment shown to the club."
Two centres who are regular first-teamers for the Hakes – Mark Sherris and Tom Nicholas - are both firemen, and most weekends at least one of them has to work, leaving St Ives a bit short of cover in that department, so the signing of Semmens will be a big benefit to the club.
