St Mary's quay work could start next spring
AN overhaul of St Mary's quay has taken a major step forward after winning funding support from the Government.
Everything is in place for a spring 2013 start to the works save for official ministerial confirmation of the cash needed for the build.
The islands' Strategic Investment Framework manager Diana Mompoloki said the project was well within the £8 to £10 million DfT imposed target price and deliverable within all the parameters set out by the Government office.
The development, she said, is also within the time frame of the European Regional Development Fund and within the current Harbour Revision order. "The project will go out to tender in late October – the funding to hit all ERDF time frames should be in place by Christmas," she said.

The plans include an extension to provide the greatest flexibility for future vessels servicing the islands, improved passenger waiting and ticketing, improved freight handling and better access and turning for vehicles.
"Delivery of this project is still dependent on Penzance Harbour plans also being successful and some kind of scheme being delivered in Penzance," said Diana.
She added that Cornwall Council suggested if a way forward was found on both ends they would be the applicant for the funds and would manage the build process.
"This is important as the Council of the Isles of Scilly is tiny and would find it costly and risky to cash flow an £8 to £10 million project, especially with the requirements at the airport."
Addressing the islands' council recently chief executive Philip Hygate said the blueprint for works is the optimal solution with minimal resources. And he added that the joint nature of the Penzance and Isles of Scilly scheme remained a priority with the Department for Transport.
"However I believe we are in a very favourable position and would hope clarity will be received soon so that the quay work can go forward," he said.
