St Mawgan flying high
ST MAWGAN are through to the quarter-finals of the KMD Developments Knockout Cup after a 2-0 extra time win over Gunnislake.
St Mawgan were fortunate to take the game to the extra period as their keeper Nathan Prentice saved a penalty in the second half of normal time.
Darren Roose put St Mawgan ahead from a Gunni back pass that stuck in the mud leaving the keeper stranded, and he then added a second in the closing minutes of extra time.
With a host of league games called off either because of frozen or waterlogged surfaces, AFC St Austell were relieved to play their Division One match with Polperro and closed the gap on runaway leaders St Columb Major after a 4-2 win.
They did it the hard way as Polperro raced two ahead in the opening half with goals from Dave King and Gordon Niner. St Austell received a lifeline before half time with a Phil Hutchings penalty.
The second half in worsening conditions was lightened up by two quality goals from Nick Bennetts to put the hosts in front. Hutchings then sealed the points in the last ten minutes with his second goal.
Roche have put themselves right in the Division Three promotion picture after a 4-1 win at third placed Mount Charles.
In a good game of football despite the atrocious conditions Roche took the lead within five minutes when the ball fell tantalisingly for Daley Turner to smash home.
The visitors expected a penalty when Jamie Robinson was challenged by two defenders in the box, but the referee issued a caution to the attacker instead.
Roche doubled the advantage ten minutes before half time when Craig Phillips headed in Bruce Campbell's free kick.
With the visitors looking to hold their lead the opening of the second half was low key, but Mount Charles breathed life back in the game when Mark Perry pulled a goal back after seventy minutes.
The Roche response was quick as Jack Jago bundled the ball home from all of two yards five minutes later. With the game in its last minute Roche were awarded a penalty and Robinson hammed home their fourth. Leaders Padstow United faced a difficult game at home to fourth placed North Petherwin and a final score of 2-2 leaves the title and promotions races right in the mix.
Kyle Tippett and Sean Blows scored for Padstow with Jim Werran and Tom Foulds replying for Petherwin.
Tregony and St Minver also drew 2-2. Alex Pearce and Aaron Trebilcock claimed the home goals with Richard and Chris Simmons hitting back for St Minver.
In the only game played in Division Four, leaders Stoke Climsland stretched their lead after winning 4-2 at Lanivet Inn. Andy Morris, Rob Cleveland, Andy Wing and Adam Savage found the target for Stoke with Gary Masters getting a brace in reply.
