Stonehenge-like structure near Camborne stands once more
WORK has started to reassemble Carwynnen Quoit, a Stonehenge-like structure near Camborne.
The Neolithic portal dolmen, a scheduled ancient monument, is at Frying Pan Field, also known as Cromlech Parc. Built 5,000 years ago, it collapsed in the 1960s.
On All Hallows Eve, October 31, volunteer diggers battled in the wind and rain alongside experts to expose the socket for the first upright stone, or orthostat, so it could be put back into position, while Sally Herriett demonstrated ancient technology, looking at prehistoric artefacts and the art of flint-knapping, making blades and other tools using flint.
The Sustainable Trust's £55,000 restoration project will resume in spring, when a time capsule will be buried at the site, and is due for completion by Midsummer's Day.
