HELLYSARDH – it might look like an anagram, or a Scrabble score-busting word, but it means a whole new departure for Helston and The Lizard.

It is the name chosen for a planned street festival which will take place in an event-filled September next year.

Dave Finney, a former head teacher in the Helston area who came up with the festival concept, said the name represented "a clever combination of the Cornish names for Helston (Hellys) and Lizard (Lysardh)". It was chosen by Ginny Hocking following a competition to name the festival which is scheduled for September 10, 2011.

This will take place during the Harvest Fair weekend and a week after the Cornish Gorsedd returns to Helston.

Mr Finney said the event would "showcase all the local talent across a variety of age groups".

This would include performing and visual arts, music, crafts, local food and produce, heritage and leisure.

It will take place throughout Helston, but involve people from all over the area, in venues such as the Sunken Garden, Meneage and Coinagehall streets, the Guildhall and Coronation Park and lake.

"It will be a major celebration which will attract huge numbers of people to the area," said Mr Finney. As part of a series of events – Harvest Fair will also include the usual horticulture, dog and pet shows and the carnival – Mr Finney believed this could only be good for the area.

"It will be a time of great fun and inspiration for locals and tourists alike, and presents a superb marketing opportunity for Helston and The Lizard as a destination."

Thus far, though, there is one element missing – a logo to represent the festival.

Another competition has been organised for all "Hellysardh" community members to come up with a design.

Also, secondary school students in the area will be asked to produce high-quality graphic versions of the winning entry.

All designs have to be submitted to Fran Treen at Helston Community College by next Friday from which ten will be chosen.

The winning design will be picked in February and there will be prizes for the winners.
