Cornwall student duo are crowned UK's best in their exams

A LOSTWITHIEL student is officially one of the best in the country.

Truro College student Arron Jolliffe came first in the country for law, ahead of 1,163 other students, after achieving 390 marks out of 400.

And Bethany Greaves got 400 out of 400 for her English language A level, putting her first of all the 3,249 candidates.

Arron is now reading law at University College London.

He said: "I was surprised but I knew I had done all right. It was nice to know, and mum and dad were probably more pleased than me."

His father, Mark Jolliffe, said: "We knew he had good results but to be the top in the country is exceptional."

Bethany, from Penzance and now studying at Cambridge University, said: "I had no idea – I was expecting to have to retake.

"It was staggering to think I was the only one with full marks. It's given me a lot of confidence."

Bethany's father, Paul Greaves, said: "It's hard work allied to ability and we're extremely proud of her."

Tutors at Truro College were delighted with their pupils' success.

Ann Kneebone, head of the law department, said: "It's fantastic and so well deserved.

"Arron was one of those students who always gave of his very best – and his very best was outstanding."

Guy Essex, deputy team leader for languages, said of Bethany: "She is a rare talent and has a very bright academic future ahead of her. A credit to all her teachers."

The examining board, the Welsh Joint Education Committee, sent awards and cheques for £50 to both students which were presented by the college principal, David Walrond.

He said: "Truro and Penwith College has provided the highest scoring A-level candidates nationally on several occasions, but to have two of our students achieve that accolade in one exam session really is rather special.

"It's a brilliant outcome for these students and their teaching staff."
