Suitenoir are back in black on new album
FOR A while now music fans have been calling Suitenoir a "Cornish Queens of the Stone Age".
Ridiculous and not a little sacrilegious you may think, but just have a listen to the trio's newly released debut album, Nothing Succeeds Like Excess – the same way with an incessant, staccato riff and a similar power to the drums, but there's a more radio-friendly pop edge to Suitenoir recalling that other sacred cow, Nirvana.

The seesawing guitars on Vampires evoke Nirvana's Bleach, while the desperate minor chords and vocals on Just A Ride are a cousin to Placebo.
If they're a product of their influences, then they're taking from the right ones. But this isn't a derivative tribute – songs like Too Young, a rock club classic if ever I heard one, have enough of Suitenoir's songwriting skills to brush aside any grunge gossip.
The band, who have supported everyone from Nazareth and New Model Army to The Subways and Max Raptor, already have celebrity fans.
Go online and catch the excellent video for Too Young, directed by Ryan Mackfall from Stithians and filmed at Bodmin Boxing Club.
Natural Born Killers actress Juliette Lewis, a fan of the video, tweeted: "Feel like we would have toured when I was in The Licks. Not much good rock'n'roll around these days, but you might wanna check these guys out."
Suitenoir certainly have pedigree.
Frontman Richard Searby-Bates has been a mainstay on the Cornish scene for years and has the aquiline rock star looks of Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell. Bassist Lee "Pixie" Matthews and drummer Ryan Hannaford both have form, being previous members of Rosie and the Goldbug and Downtown Riots.
Their no-nonsense hybrid of 1980s Seattle, 1960s Detroit and 1970s London has been given extra weight on the album by well-known Cornwall-based producers Gareth Young and Dare Mason.
With so many Cornish rock bands making their mark far beyond the Tamar, here's another one set to break out.
The album is available from iTunes, Spotify and Amazon.
