Sun sets on bid to move UK clocks forward
The Government will not allow any more time to debate a Bill on moving UK time forward by an hour because the current version will never be law, the Commons was told yesterday.
Leader of the House Sir George Young rebuffed calls from all sides of the Commons to give the Daylight Saving Bill the chance to make further progress. A determined group of about 10 MPs talked the Bill out of time last Friday when MPs had about five hours to consider amendments and send it to the Lords. With no further days expected to be given to Private Members Bills in this Parliamentary session, the proposal will fail.

The proposal – backed by Westcountry tourism leaders but opposed by the Scottish government – called for a detailed study and consultation on moving clocks forward by an hour and opened the door to a trial period.
Exeter Labour MP Ben Bradshaw said: “Given the overwhelming support (for the Bill) and the outrageous wrecking tactics last Friday and the fact we’re not exactly inundated with Government business in this House, why don’t you bring a Government Bill in the next few weeks?”
But Sir George told him it would not be possible.
