More than 1,400 businesses and households in Perranporth and Wadebridge can now connect to superfast broadband.

The towns are the latest to be upgraded as part of the £132 million Superfast Cornwall programme, a partnership between the European Union, BT and Cornwall Council to roll-out faster broadband across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Nigel Ashcroft, programme director of Superfast Cornwall for Cornwall Development Company, which manages the project, said: "This is the first time that a broadband network of this scale has been built in a rural area in the UK and it will take time to complete. But it will be worth the wait – within the next few years, Cornwall will become one of the best connected places in the world."

Chris Pomfret, chairman of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, said: "The arrival of superfast broadband is great news for Perranporth and Wadebridge as they are now on their way to becoming two of the best connected places in the world. Superfast broadband can open great new opportunities for local businesses and boost performance. For example, using Skype can make it easier to build relationships with customers across the UK or overseas.
