The best bodyboarders in the Westcountry made the most of ideal conditions to impress the judges at the first ever Junior Show Down competition.

With clean 3ft waves, light winds and glorious sunshine, the 20 youngsters set a spectacularly high standard with an array of aerial moves in front of crowds at Newquay's Tolcarne beach.

On home territory, Joe Woodhouse won the under-18s section, using his local knowledge and biding his time to pick off the biggest waves of the entire event.

It earned him nearly perfect scores from the judging panel, in the last three minutes of the competition – and the overall title.

Tyler Littlejohns, who spent the summer chasing swells in the UK and training in France, breezed to first place in the under-16 section and entered the under-18 final as the favourite, only to be pipped for first place.

Luke Harper, from Portreath, won the under-14s division aged only 11.

Rob Barber, director of event sponsor Bodyboard-Depot, which is based on Headlands Road in Newquay, said: "We set out to create an event that would give Britain's junior bodyboarders the chance to compete in a fun environment and help them gain experience with the competition format.

"We saw some great performances and some really promising talent for the future. Next week is the British Bodyboard National Championships at Porth-towan – let's hope that this event and the monthly coaching sessions that we have been holding for the juniors at the Bodyboard-Depot school has prepared them for it."
