Surfers Against Sewage to clean up UK beaches as part of cold water tour
A CORNISH charity dedicated to protecting waves from litter has launched a mission to clean up beaches across the UK.
Surfers Against Sewage will travel all across the UK next month as part of their Cold Water Beach Clean Series campaign.
The three month operation will see charity volunteers head off to beaches owned by the Crown Estate including Thurso in Scotland to clean up litter along the coastline.
A spokesperson said: “Over the past 20 years the amount of litter washing up on our beaches or left by the public in these unique and beautiful spaces has almost doubled, with levels of waste peaking in the autumn and winter months.

“Marine litter is the most visible pollution on our beaches and not only threatens these fragile environments and wildlife, but can also severely affect quality of life, recreational opportunities and aesthetic value for coastal communities and beach users.”
The initiative is being supported through an investment from The Crown Estate’s Marine Stewardship Fund, which provides funding for community projects that enhance the marine and coastal assets it manages.
The Cold Water Beach Clean Series is part of SAS’s rapidly growing beach clean programme directly removingmarine litter from the environment and raising public awareness on the issue. SAS mobilises around 5,000 volunteers annually.
