A lost swan was rescued from the M5 at Exeter at lunchtime yesterday. The bird is thought to have mistaken the grey asphalt for water and had hit an overhead cable and landed on the motorway, a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said. The fire service sent a specialist rescue team to the incident between junctions 30 and 31 of the southbound motorway, which was reported just before noon. Firefighters managed to catch the swan, which was not injured in the ordeal. It was left in the care of the RSPCA.
