He converted his 16 acre garden into a fine 18-hole golf course which has gone from strength to strength.
Nine miles from South Molton, the course is situated on the edge of Chulmleigh, just a few minutes walk from the centre.
The club offers a relaxed atmosphere and peaceful setting. While the course is ideal for families, and anyone who wants to try the game, it remains a serious and testing challenge for experienced golfers.
Designed by John Goodman, then secretary of Saunton Golf Club and chairman of the English Golfing Union, the course has been developed over the years.
The owners bought it 11 years ago and are now retiring.
The clubhouse is set on the edge of the course. It comprises a spacious clubroom and licensed bar on the ground floor which has a superb view of the course.
There are male and female cloakrooms and changing facilities, a pro chop and kitchen.
On the first floor, the spacious and well-presented owners' accommodation provides a modern kitchen, L-shaped sitting room/dining room with fireplace and wood-burning stove, and views over the course to Dartmoor in the distance.
The master bedroom is en suite. Bedroom two has fitted wardrobes and views over the course, while bedroom three is used as an office. There is also a family bathroom.
Outside is a good-size car park, double garage and storage space, and an outbuilding for machinery storage.
A paved terrace and barbecue area overlooks the course and has access to the club room.
An additional cottage is available by separate negotiation.
The property extends to about 13 acres in all.
Seddons (01769 581585) is inviting offers in excess of £425,000.
