Coastguards in Cornwall have urged walkers and sea users to leave information on when they are expected back after spending 90 minutes searching for four "missing" kayakers on Saturday.

Dave Jackson, station manager for Land's End Coastguard, spent 90 minutes searching for the kayakers after an alarm was sounded by a concerned resident at 6.30pm.

The resident had called the coastguard after becoming concerned for the wellbeing of the kayakers who had parked at Porthgwarra Car Park near St Levan shortly after midday and not returned.

Fortunately, the kayakers, who had paddled to Penzance but not left any details, returned safely just before 8pm allowing Falmouth Coastguard to cancel a lifeboat launch at Sennen Cove just in time. Mr Jackson said that if they had left a note on their car or called the coastguard to inform them of their expected journey time it would have saved a potentially costly search.
