NEWQUAY should strive to have dazzling public toilets that visitors tell all their friends about and reflect the quality of the town.

This was the message from town councillors following a unanimous decision to take over the freehold from Cornwall Council on the majority of public conveniences.

Speaking at a specially arranged full council meeting on Monday, Jacqui Fair said: "I believe toilets … should be something that people go away and talk about. It's an opportunity to impress visitors and locals alike with the quality of Newquay. The reflection of a town is by its hygiene and cleanliness."

The council had been given a deadline of April 1 to make a decision on whether to take over the toilets. Refusing to take responsibility would have led to their closure and sale by cash-strapped Cornwall Council.

Members of the town council said their hands were tied, but they agreed to keep the toilets running for at least a year after which taxpayers are likely to be consulted.

Pat Lambshead said: "What's most important is the council reviews the situation in 12 months and goes out to consultation with the people of Newquay about whether they as council tax payers would wish to pay close to £100,000 over a full year."

It is understood the toilets could cost up to £120,000 a year to clean.
