Torpoint's 'very special' GCSE group rose to every challenge

TORPOINT Community College is looking forward to welcoming students to its GCSE awards evening in December after they achieved the best results in the school's history.

Ninety-nine per cent of students attained five or more A* to C grades at GCSE or equivalent, an improvement of 34 per cent within a two-year period.

Deputy head teacher Jeremy Plumb, said: "This significant improvement is the reflection of each and every inspired individual learner.

"The college is looking forward to welcoming a significant number of these students into the sixth form at the college which again this year also celebrates excellent results."

Students who studied with partner schools and colleges and on vocational programmes also did exceptionally well achieving distinctions and merits from their courses.

Out of 154 students, more than 90 gained a minimum of 5 or more GCSE grades A* to C including English and maths.

Those doing exceptionally well included Kirsty McBain with five A* and five A grades, Simone Steenhagen with four A*s, four As and two Bs, Matthew Allen with five A*s, two As and three Bs and Matthew House with four A*, one A and five B grades.

Mr Plumb said: "It was clear that the class of 2012 was a very special group, rising to every challenge.

"For example, collectively they increased the number of A* to C grades in GCSE mathematics by a massive 14 per cent from the previous year.

"Individual subject areas celebrated student successes with above average pass rates in over ten different curriculum areas."
