CORNWALL COUNCIL is to take part in a national conference today on the subject of town centre survival.

The authority has been asked to speak at the meeting, studying the impact of the report by Mary Portas into the state of Britain's high streets.

Guy Thomas, the council's town centre management specialist, will be explaining his ideas to the conference.

"There's a need to support town centres through this change and encourage ways of making the 'collective high street' of Cornwall more resilient," he said.

"The local authority has a role to play in this as much as the private sector."

Mr Thomas set up and chairs the Cornwall Town Centre Managers' Forum which has four business improvement district (BID) managers and four town centre managers (TCM), in addition to the direct work his team is undertaking in other towns.

Work is under way to look at bringing a BID to Penzance with local businesses set to be asked for their views on the scheme. BIDs are funded by a levy on each trader which is then spent on enhancements to the retail environment.
